You've probably heard a lot of buzz about Facebook and Twitter. And if you haven't participated, you're probably wondering what all the excitement is about — and how you can get in on it. Here's your opportunity to find out.

Facebook makes it easy to connect and stay connected to family and friends. And Twitter gives you instant access to the information that interests you most. You'll probably really love "friending" people on Facebook and "tweeting" on Twitter. But you won't know until you try. Here's how to get started, along with a few dos and don'ts for beginners:

Facebook

Want to connect with your children and grandchildren? See an album of photos of your niece's wedding? Find and connect with your best friends from grade school? Facebook is a popular global social networking website that allows you to do all that and more.

It's easy to get started. To set up your free account, go to www.facebook.com and fill out the simple information that is requested. Click the green "Sign up" button and confirm your account. You'll land on a page that contains just about everything you need to know to get going.

Facebook Dos and Don'ts:

• DO remember the e-mail address and password you sign up with. You'll need both.
• DO use your real name. People can't find you very well if you don't.
• DO fill out your profile. This will let people know who you are.
• DO add photos. It's easy and photos are great conversation starters.
• DO find Morningside of Fullerton's Facebook page, click "Like" and stay in touch with the community.
• DON'T share information that is private or could be unsafe, including credit card or financial information, or your social security number.
• DON'T leave the default privacy settings as they are. Customize them.
• DON'T hesitate to allow some people to only see a limited version of your profile and not your wall, interests and contact information.

Twitter

Do you want to stay on top of the latest information about what you find interesting, but you don't want to spend your whole day doing so? Twitter is a real-time information network that allows you to send and receive short (140-character) bursts of information to and from the people who matter most to you.

You can set up a Twitter account for free at www.twitter.com. Enter your full name, username, password and e-mail address. And you're on your way to becoming a tweeter!

Twitter Dos and Don'ts

• DO be precise and brief. You only have 140 characters per tweet.
• DO choose carefully whom you follow. Add too many followers and you could end up getting overwhelmed with tweets.
• DO tweet interesting, useful things - not what you ate for breakfast.
• DO be polite and treat others as you'd like to be treated.
• DON'T forget to follow those who follow you. It's best to give everyone a chance, and you can unfollow them later if you want.
• DON'T tweet anything too personal. Anything you say will be public knowledge.
