It's Never Too Late to Start Exercising
Share
There are benefits of exercise for people of all ages, and the sooner you start, the better. Getting active is a great way to enhance your physical condition and combat a wide array of diseases. Exercise can improve your blood pressure and lessen your chance of developing diabetes and heart disease or having a stroke. It can alleviate the stiffness of arthritis, help with weight control and improve sleep. Breaking a sweat can even lift your spirits.
The ideal fitness program includes three components:
- Cardio – such as brisk walking or swimming that increases your heart rate and breathing – offers protection against heart disease.
- Strength training – including lifting weights and using machines – preserves bone tissue and lean muscle and builds strength.
- Flexibility training – such as yoga and Pilates – improves balance and helps you avoid falls and reduce injuries.
Of course, before you start any kind of exercise, check with your doctor first. If you have a medical condition or impairment, your doctor may be able to suggest the best type of exercise for you.
Ready to jump on the fitness bandwagon? Here are some tips to get you started, ensure you avoid injuries and inspire you to turn exercise into a lifelong habit:
- Start slow. Too much too soon can result in injuries. Even two hours a week can go a long way toward improving your health.
- Begin with a light-intensity workout. Allow yourself three to six months to work up to a moderate intensity workout.
- Get a pedometer and set a goal of walking 10,000 steps a day.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator. This can burn calories and increase endurance.
- Set a goal. Even a small goal will keep you motivated.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout.
- Set aside the same time every day to exercise.
- Find an exercise buddy. You'll be more likely to stick to your program if you have a partner.
- Warm up and cool down to reduce muscle stiffness and improve your performance.
- Do what you enjoy so you continue it. It could be walking, swimming, gardening – whatever suits your fancy. Just do it!
